Nature of web design

Designing for the web is a multi dimensional concept that requires consideration of the aesthetics, functionality, personality and usability of the site. All of these have to come together in a dynamic process that passes the user unnoticed and yet connects on an emotional level.  So, without actually knowing why they like the site, they need to, and have to, want to come back for more.

I’ve always maintained that the genius is in the simplicity.

The complexity however resides in the simplicity. From the moment the concept is born through to the moment it appears to the site visitor and beyond there is a continual process of evolution that doesn’t stop until the site is permanently deleted.

Sites that are analysed on a regular basis evolve more accurately than the ‘let’s do something different for the sake of doing something different.’ The exciting part of web evolution is that changes don’t have to be drastic. Small changes in the position of an image, the colour of a background, the text on a link can make a significant difference.

Clues as to what to do will come from the visitors to your website. The stats will indicate what your visitors are doing and if you feel they are missing the mark you can make changes and measure the difference instantly.

All too often the success or failure of a site is left at the ‘that looks nice’ phase. That is essentially the starting point for what is to come.

Keep one eye on the design and one on the stats. You’re sure to meet at a point where your look and feel and design harmonise at their optimal level.
