Telepathy on the Internet

A website is not the place to hide your message, but you can if you want to.

It happens often that copy provided by the client is copied and pasted into the appropriate spaces and linked to the navigation. Once linked and the links work, the page is complete and the site ready to go live.

Often there is no thought to the marketing usability and the site, which contains all the information, makes sense only to those involved in its construction. Visitors require a certain amount of telepathy in order to understand, or a remarkable insight while visiting the website to navigate and find all the important bits.

Even when met with a benefit statement that clearly tells you what the company does, the copy fails to back it up and interest soon turns to boredom and boredom to moving on.

A good indication of the care and thought taken in creating the website.

The bottom line is that budget will dictate the time, effort and skill employed to publish a good web site. When the budget isn’t there something will be left out of the offering. In many cases the website becomes a site for the sake of a site.

The point to remember is that websites are only effective when viewed by visitors.

The visitor is not concerned with the budget limitations or development restrictions. They are looking for answers and in most cases prefer to find solutions rather than pretty, hard to navigate websites. Design and copy has to be seen in the right light and a balance achieved.

The focus of the site will often determine the nature of the content. For some products graphics are more important than copy and vice versa.

When deciding to balance your budget against what the visitor will see remember that your customer comes first and allocate according to what will get you results from the site.

Don’t rely on the web designer to come up with all the answers. Web designers are not marketing and copy guru’s all rolled into one neat package.

You know your business better than anybody else does and can make a valuable contribution ensuring the right focus is placed on the site. Designers can provide a professional finish providing your brief is accurate.

Once your site is complete get input from customers and make sure that it is easy to use and that you get the result intended.

If your site requires telepathy to understand or decipher the response may be just as strong, telepathically that is.
